Transbay Bus Lanes: A Better Ride For All

Imagine a quick and reliable ride between the East Bay and San Francisco. Imagine healthier air and a reduction in carbon emissions. We want to turn that imagination into a reality. Will you join us?

Why a bus only lane?

Environmentally Friendly

Transportation is the largest source of greenhouse gas emissions in California. Primarily due to this increase in driving, California is not on track to meet its 2030 climate goals. Adding a bus lane on the Bay Bridge will reduce emissions and help protect the environment.

Equitable

70 people in a bus should not have to wait in traffic behind a car with only one person in it. A bus-only lane ensures priority to the vehicle with more people in it, and as the cost of driving continues to rise, transit will continue to be the more accessible & affordable option for Californians.

Increased Capacity

Every day, over fifteen thousand people take buses on the Bay Bridge. Adding a bus lane will enable more people to take the bus, reduce travel times, and increase total bridge capacity.

What Leaders Are Saying

“I really hope we can make a bus only lane on the Bay Bridge happen! It would be huge for transbay transit riders.”

— Rebecca Saltzman — BART Director, Capitol Corridor JPA Chair, @BCAction Deputy Director

“We should plan and build a new bay bridge bus lane - and meanwhile we should go ahead and immediately do the 580 carpool/express bus lane extension. Both/and. Not either/or. “

Rebecca Kaplan — Oakland Council President, Board member of the Alameda County Transportation Commission

“There should be a bus only lane on the bridge, at least during rush hours. It’s very short sighted that there is not. BART is crowded during rush hour, so we need to get more folks on buses. This also impacts people I represent on Treasure Island, who face constant delays.”

— Matt Haney — SF D6 Supervisor
